Gather

We acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung, the traditional owners and custodians of this country, on which this exhibition is held. The Dja Dja Wurrung people have been creating — making art, music, stories, connection — on this land for tens of thousands of years. Their creativity shaped this country, literally and spiritually. Always was, always will be.
About Gather
Gather is an exhibition that brings together artists connected through a unique approach to materials, a gentle sensibility, a spirit of generosity, and a desire to understand and learn through the process of making. Textile art often evokes preconceptions of quilts and cross-stitch, but this exhibition challenges those notions — showcasing exceptional artists creating work that is deeply emotional and beautiful.
The exhibition grew out of WeStitch, a small group of women who meet regularly in Castlemaine's West End to stitch and talk about art, life, and all the essential things. Those Sunday gatherings are a highlight for all of us, and Gather was born from a desire to share that sense of connection with the broader community. As part of the exhibition, we offer public stitching sessions — a way for anyone to come and make something, together, regardless of experience.
From the beginning, Gather has included artists from WeStitch. In 2026, we extended that invitation to a broader circle of artists and community members who share our belief in what making together can do.
Gather — to bring or come together. Collecting, congregating, harvesting, deducing. And, in the language of sewing: to draw fabric into small, deliberate folds.
